Freedom during the Revolution

According to the website, African-Americans had the chance to be an active participant in the Revolutionary War. They obviously chose the side that granted them freedom. Over half a million of the African-Americans in the colonies were slaves according to the website. There were some people that thought slavery was wrong but people pushed their thoughts aside. The colonists themselves were looking for some liberty for themselves while taking the liberty away from the African-American by enslaving them. The one thing that was suppose to bring equality for all men failed to do so. There was a policy adopted that excluded slaves from the army but then the army needed slaves due to the number of people participating. They, the slaves, would gain freedom in exchange for their fight. Later on, the slave owners were rewarded if they gave their slave to they army which kind of brings us back to square one because basically they being sold again but this time to fight for our country involuntarily. But of course the south was kind of like "ummm no", so then only free african-americans were allowed to serve. In the army they worked from support roles like cooks to gunners. So some African-Americans did gain freedom, some were even given special distinction. But of course there were some that didn't get to experience freedom.
